Algoma Boreal II
Mixed Media, 16 x 20 inches
Triptych (panel 2 of 3)
The inspiration for the Algoma Boreal series was dawn light in an Algoma region (Ontario) forest as clouds were clearing after a heavy rainfall. There is often a slight greenish tinge to the light if it is warm after a heavy rain. I wanted to convey the dampness of forest air and the feeling of looking at the sky through mist and trees as a storm is passing.

“I studied the art of the ancients and that of the moderns using no systematized approach and without preconceived ideas. I no more wanted to imitate the former than I sought to copy the latter… I wanted to draw from the entire body of tradition a rational, independent sense of my own individuality. To know in order to create—this was my purpose.” – Gustave Courbet (1819-1877)
